Re: Closure of St. Hubert Catholic High School for Girls

Your Excellency:

Please accept this letter on behalf of the Mayfair Business Association (“MBA”) which represents the business community of Mayfair in Northeast Philadelphia. Many of our members are graduates of Catholic schools, especially Father Judge and St. Hubert’s. Our educations from these schools provided us with the skills to become successful, and equally or maybe more importantly the values to be the sort of businesspeople who contribute back to improve the community. Both schools have been long time anchors to our neighborhood. Losing St. Hubert’s would leave a huge void.

We respectfully ask that the alumni, parents, and local community be given the opportunity to not only save St. Huberts, but to help transform it into an institution that not just survives, but thrives, and continues to produce productive and responsible citizens.

After much retrenching, if the church wishes to make a stand, our community, with its decades of Catholic heritage, is the place to do it. Let us work together to reclaim the legacy left to us by earlier generations and to preserve and improve it for future generations.

We are happy to announce that the Mayfair Town Watch training and certification classes have been scheduled!!! The first training session is set for February 2nd from 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm at the Perzel Center, 2990 St. Vincent St. The second session is set for February 9th from 6:30 pm till 8:30 pm at the Perzel Center (that location may be subject to change-we will e-mail you with an update).

The number of seats is LIMITED so if you are serious about joining and willing and able to attend either session, e-mail us back with a confirmation.

Thank you very much for your very thoughtful letter, which I received by email. I will share it with the Schools Office and also with the committee reviewing appeals regarding the schools.

As you probably know, our Catholic School System is under a great deal of financial distress and we have run out of money to subsidize the schools. So we have to take a look at long term viability as the primary reason to making decisions about the future of the school.

Every family has to make difficult decisions based on these same realities. I know you know that. But I am happy you wrote to me and I certainly will put your thoughts into the mix when it comes to reviewing the recommendations of the Blue Ribbon Committee.

May the Lord give you peace and every blessing.

Your Excellency:

First and foremost, welcome to Philadelphia: the City of Brotherly Love and the City of Neighborhoods. Unfortunately for you, in less than five (5) short months into your tenure here you have been thrown into the Lion’s Den. We all realize that you, in your position as leader of one of the largest Archdiocese in the United States, have a heavy load to lift and pray that you do so wisely. Please accept this letter on behalf of the Mayfair Civic Association (“MCA”) which represents the neighbors of the Mayfair Community in Northeast Philadelphia. This is a community that was built and stands around the Catholic Church, myself a product of well over a decade of Catholic education via newly merged St. Matthew Elementary School, Father Judge High School and LaSalle University.

Many of our constituents previously attended Cardinal Dougherty or North Catholic for High School or St. Bernard, St. Leo or St. Bartholomew for grade school. These closures were hard to swallow, but understanding went into them because the neighborhoods around these institutions changed drastically, nevertheless, that is the not the same with St. Hubert; a school that has educated females in our community for decades. The closing of this school will have our neighbors questioning the future of their children’s education as well as life within our neighborhood and this school was, in some cases, one of the only things keeping them here. Without this reason to stay, many will push off further into the suburbs or out of the Archdiocese entirely opting to relocate over the bridge to South Jersey. This exodus will inflict significant pain on our community and we may not be able to recover.

We realize that the “Blue Ribbon Commission” worked long and hard on their decision, however, when looking over the members of this commission, one item that was ever-present was that this commission seemed to lack any member with significant history or background in the neighborhoods of Philadelphia. It is these neighborhoods that gave rise to the Catholic Church; it is these neighborhoods that have formed who we are, and it is these neighborhoods that make Philadelphia what it is. Therefore, by closing St. Hubert and countless other schools in the region, you will be dealing a death blow to the neighborhoods and perhaps putting the final nail in the coffin for the City of Neighborhoods. Your Excellency, we ask that you, as our new leader take some time with the Commission’s finding and get to know the neighborhoods that many members of your flock call home. Once you have been there we are sure that you will understand what St. Hubert and the Catholic Church mean to our home.

Once filed, ownership of civic owner property will be given back to the neighbors, thereby closing all business held over by the previous MCA administration (the previous was the playground).

MONTHLY EMAIL LIST
We will eventually develop a monthly email highlighting member news for the upcoming month. The difficulty here will be to get everyone to figure out what they are going to be doing four weeks in advance.

We have had a monthly email list for the Grey Lodge since the beginning. I am always pleasantly surprised at how many people actually read it. And all it has cost us is my time.

It has also been a very good tool to force me to focus on the month ahead and to always have something new to keep customers interested and giving them reasons to keep coming back.

OUR CONTACT WITH REPORTERS
Local reporters (NE Times, Neasphilly.com, TV news) are all looking for news to report. Mia will get to know who the media contacts are and send them info she thinks they might like to use. So once again, please get your news to Mia so she has something to work with.

I am very excited about this. This is a very positive step and a new phase for the Mayfair Business Assoc.

Now is the time to show your community spirit and pride!

On Sunday November 20th, 2011 (rain date -December 4th) from Noon to 3:00, please join us in our 35th stroll down "The Ave"!
We want to celebrate our community and all of the local business who have been the ﬁnancial backbone of our neighborhood. Many generations have come to the avenue for this fun filled family event each fall whether they still live here, or have since moved away.

This year we have made a few exciting changes!

The Grand Marshall this year will be Ed Kelly, who was, and still is, a very active member in our community! He's also the man responsible for building the Pennypack Stage for all to enjoy live, local music. Once Ed was chosen, we found it only fitting that the theme for the 2011 Mayfair/Holmebsurg Thanksgiving Parade be - "Bringing Music to Mayfair"

We will have two announcers this year. One located at Ryan and Frankford avenues, and the other towards the end of the Parade Route. Participants will
have the opportunity to perform for two to three minutes at each location.

The triangle at Cottman and Frankford avenues this year will be buzzing with radio station B101, balloon artists, face painters and much more!

We've also added the opportunity for our local community to enter in their own home made ﬂoats, as well as a baby/toddler contest!

A baby/toddler section of the parade will feature ribbons awarded for the
"Best Fancy Duds" for a boy and girl, as well as the "Most Creative Stroller or Wagon" and "Best Parade Themed Stroller or Wagon".

We'll also be awarding ribbons for the
"Most Creative Float", "The Funniest Float", as well as "The Best Parade Themed Float".

All community floats and participants are the sole responsibility of the towing vehicle owner. The towing vehicle must be fully insured, and the driver / operator must be currently licensed. All floats must be family oriented, and due to the Septa trolley lines, no taller than 12 feet high. All floats must pass the Parade Committee inspection prior to running in the parade.

Each year the parade is put on through donor support and advertising opportunities.

The parade route runs from Rhawn street to Knorr street.

Holy Terrors STARS needs your Support.

The Holy Terrors STARS program is a program for Special needs children. This program opens up the gym and playground at New Foundations Charter School every Friday evening for the children to play loosely organized (because of the children's lack of understanding) sports such as basketball, baseball, soccer and track and field. My own son, Joey, has been attending since last February and we feel that it has benefited him by giving him an outlet while also tiring him out at night. It has also grown into somewhat of a support group for he parents. That being said, they are organizing their First beef n Bowl at Thunder Bird Lanes of of Holme Circle on Saturday, October 22 at 9:30PM. $35 tickets include bowling, shoe rental, food, beer, soda and DJ. Also, they are still looking for lane sponsors which I believe is roughly $80 as well as some one to donate a keg of beer or items for baskets to be auctioned off. Any money they receive goes to purchasing equipment or providing snacks or materials for the kids. If you are interested, please email Aimee Boothman at alrb1021@aol.com. Online "Plan Finder" offers unbiased resource for people with Medicare to review 2012 plan options

In advance of the new, earlier annual enrollment period, people with Medicare can begin reviewing plan benefit and cost information on Saturday, October 1^st, 2011. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will launch access to its popular web-based Medicare Plan Finder that allows beneficiaries, their families, trusted representatives, and senior program advocates to look at all local drug and health plan options that are available for the 2012 benefit year.

"With Open Enrollment coming early this year, it is important that people with Medicare take advantage of the next couple weeks to review their current coverage and compare it with the options that are available for next year," said CMS Administrator Donald M. Berwick, M.D. "The information that's available now on the Plan Finder will also help caregivers, health providers, and partners that support and counsel seniors and people with disabilities in selecting the best plan for their needs."

The annual enrollment period begins earlier this year, on October 15^th, and runs through December 7^th. People with Medicare will have seven weeks to review Medicare Advantage and Part D prescription drug coverage benefits and plan options, and choose the option that best meets their unique needs. The earlier open enrollment period also ensures that Medicare has enough time to process plan choices so that coverage begins without interruption on January 1, 2012.

People can use the Plan Finder – available at www.Medicare.gov –by inserting their home zip code to find out which Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Prescription Drug (Part D) plans are available in their areas.

This year marks the 20th Annual Tacony History Day! On September 17th our neighborhood will continue its proud tradition with an array of string bands, drum and bugle corps, youth groups, classic and military vehicles making their way up Torresdale Avenue at 11:00 AM! The Parade route is expected to return to Princeton Avenue, where it will turn to Cottage Street, after the long-awaited completion of Phase 1 of the I-95 re-ramping project. The 20th Annual Disston Festival, held immediately after the Parade at Disston Recreation Center, will feature the usual complement of kiddie rides, games, contests, live music and dancers plus expanded refreshment options. The big feature is always the indoor display of local memorabilia and Tacony history for a nostalgic trip through time.

Things have been very active in Mayfair lately!

A NEW playground, the Methadone Clinic, the May-Fair, Pennypack Concerts, the Parade, Membership Drive, Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony - where to begin? I'll touch on a few and let others chime in on the rest.

Our Mayfair May-Fair was a huge success this year and it continues to get better and better each year! Thanks again to all who participated and helped to make this years Fair a fabulous family fun filled day! We're already planning next years Fair, so if you've got any suggestions or would like to help out, please feel free to send em on over or sign up!

The Pennypack Concerts have been absolutely amazing! Well over 1000+ people attend these shows every week and they're consistently trouble free and run flawlessly (as long as Mother Nature lets it - haha). The Mayfair Civic and Business Associations attend these shows every week under our red tent and we observe families come to these shows, enjoy themselves, and donate their hard earned money to keep these shows going. Once the concert is over, they collect themselves including their trash, and leave peacefully. It sounds so simple, but it really speaks volumes for the people of Mayfair. Thank you!

As I'm sure most of you know, Pennypack was flooded out during hurricane Irene, and the trailer and it's contents were a total loss. Sound equipment, lights, tables, etc. it's all gone. Donations are seriously needed to replace these things. Please go to Pennypack.org to make your donation. You can even use payal! The entire board at Pennypack Thanks You for your support!

The Mayfair tee shirts are selling like HOT CAKES! You can pick yours up at any of the Pennypack Concerts, or they're available at BellaLisa Hair Studio right on Cottman avenue (3530).

Meetings for the Holmesburg/Mayfair Thanksgiving Parade are already underway! This years theme is "Bringing Music to Mayfair" and we've selected Ed Kelly as this years Grand Marshall as not only has he been so active in and around Mayfair, but he's also the guy who (with his own finances), built the stage in Pennypack that we all enjoy during the concerts. Several local bands have already signed up to play in this years parade. We're also adding something new to the parade to include even MORE Holmesburg/Mayfair residents! This year, we're allowing anyone who wants to, to build their own float and run it up the ave on parade day! Floats must be family oriented and within size requirements. If you're interested in getting involved in this years parade, or building a float and entering it in the parade, shoot us an email and we'll set you up.

The Mayfair Civic Association membership is growing, however we'd like EVERYONE in Mayfair to get involved! For those of you who have not yet signed up, please go to our website and download and mail in the application, or they're also available at BellaLisa. Dues can be paid there as well.

Dear Neighbor,

This has been an exciting week for our Mayfair Community. Last Wednesday the School District of Philadelphia, via the School Reform Commission approved an $80,000 Grant to rebuild the Mayfair Memorial Playground. This is a huge step in completing a three year journey that we embarked on in April 2008. Countless neighbors have joined us in our efforts to finally get a play space back at Lincoln High School.

This was further highlighted yesterday evening at our Design Day at which we took input from several youths in the neighborhood as well as many committed adults as to what type of Playground would be installed. We took great care to include equipment for special needs children by including the Director of the Holy Terrors STARS program which is a sports program for children with special needs as well as a local occupational therapist. We incorporated their ideas into our overall designs in order to make this playground ideal for all children in our neighborhood. We have given our ideas to Kaboom, Inc., the project manager, and will receive, in the next week, three drawings that have incorporated our equipment requests as well as color schemes. Once we receive that, we will post them on our website and on our Facebook page for community input.

Another issue that has become quite prevalent in our neighborhood is the idea of the "Bandit signs" ie signs that read "Sell your house". "gutter clean up", etc that are tacked to telephone polls throughout our area. many of our Civic and Business Association members have been scouring the neighborhood and removing the signs.

Our members also spearheaded the effort to clean up the trailer and stage in Pennypack Park following Hurricane Irene so to have it fully functional for the next Pennypark Concert.

Finally, while the opening of a Methadone Clinic is not a positive for the neighborhood, the amount of community activism and togetherness it has spurned is second to none. We successfully collected over 2700 signatures in opposition to this clinic, rented two buses to bring over 125 residents to the Zoning Board of Adjustment, and wrote countless letters. We may not be successful in each battle, but we are battle tested and we are confident we will win the fight.

Our neighborhood may not be exactly as everyone wishes it would be, nevertheless, it is clear that we are strong, we are committed and we have pride. Thank you to everyone that has stepped forward to help fight for our neighborhood. You know who you are but especially the members of the Board of the Mayfair Civic Association, Mayfair Business Association, the Tacony Holmesburg Upper Mayfair Town Watch, the Mayfair CDC, our elected leaders, our neighboring civic groups, business groups and town watches and all our neighbors that give a damn and have stepped to plate to help ensure that Mayfair remains a great place to live, work and play.

Thank you for having us today; let us speak briefly on this topic:

1. The Friends of Mayfair Memorial Playground (“the Friends”) was founded in April 2008 for the purpose of rebuilding the Mayfair Memorial Playground (“the Playground”) after it was abruptly removed.

2. The Friends are a branch of the Mayfair Community Development Corporation (“CDC”) of which I am a Board Member and the Mayfair Civic Association (“MCA”) of which I am the President.

3. We have currently raised $23,000 from mostly neighborhood residents via door to door solicitation, our Easter Egg Hunt which brought in over $6,000, two beef n beer fundraisers, our Annual Mayfair Fallen Heroes Run honoring Police and ire that succumbed in the line of duty, and many other efforts.

4. This Playground is necessary to our community because there are no other playgrounds solely for small children (read under the age of 7) in the nearby community nor are there any playgrounds within walking distance that does not require one to cross a four lane highway (specifically Cottman Ave. and Frankford Ave.).

5. Our goal is to build a playground that can be used by all children, including those with special needs. On our Board, we have included Cyndi Hinchey, who runs the Holy STARS program which is a sports and social program dedicated to children with special needs.

6. We have set up our organization to last in perpetuity which seems to be why the last group did not fair well. Our organization has a structure that includes recruiting a minimum of two parents with a newborn to 2 year old child every year so that we may last even after our children are too old to play in that space.

7. We have also set up a system within our board for maintenance as well as securing the playground in off hours.

8. The community and businesses (through the Mayfair Business Association) has truly rallied around our efforts as have our local elected leaders. This project has made our organization tighter and our neighborhood stronger.

9. Therefore, we respectfully ask that you approve this gift and help continue to make Mayfair and our surrounding neighborhoods a great place to live, work and play.

Executive Board Position Statement

In June 2011, the Executive Boards of the Holmesburg Civic and the Mayfair Civic Associations met to discuss the area between Sheffield and Cottman Aves east of Frankford Ave to the Delaware River, an area that has been unrepresented by a civic association for most of the past decade. It was clear that the situation could not continue. The option of forming a new civic association was deemed impractical due to the relatively small size of the area and the lack of cohesive and experienced leadership. The small sample of residences from that area who attended the meeting were, when asked, generally inclined to consider themselves part of Holmesburg.

(The Mayfair Civic’s boundaries are west of Frankford Ave, south of Sheffield. The Tacony Civic is east of Frankford Ave, south of Cottman Ave. The Holmesburg Civic’s current boundaries are north of Sheffield on both sides of Frankford Ave from the Delaware River to Pennypack Creek.)

The Executive Board of the Holmesburg Civic voted at a separate meeting a couple of nights later to expand the HCA boundaries to Cottman Ave east of Frankford Ave. The general membership of the HCA was advised of that decision at the June 14 general meeting, the last before the summer break....READ MORE HERE

I am writing this letter on behalf of Friends of Summerdale Civic Association, to offer our support in your attempt to stop the opening of the methadone clinic in your community.

On behalf of this community, I can say that we are appalled by what has taken place and are very familiar with these, “behind the scenes” deals that are made, and the community is left out. In Summerdale, we were not informed when the School District purchased the JFK site, and was gong build a new high school.

As community leaders, and people who live in these areas we have a right to fight for what is best in our neighborhoods. We feel that it is not in the best interest of the community of Mayfair/Holmesburg to have this type of clinic in the neighborhood. The type of people who go to these clinics are not working class people. They are addicts trying to get another hit. I am very familiar with this activity on a personal note and will do what I can to support your community.

We all know that there are plenty of other empty buildings or vacant land areas that would be a better place for this clinic, away from the residential areas. These types of facilities are not something that should be placed in residential areas, as there are families with young children, and seniors who like to walk on Frankford Ave.

As I said before, on behalf of Friends of Summerdale Civic Association, we will support you in your efforts to save your neighborhood. Please feel free to contact me if I can offer any assistance.

The Bustleton neighborhood of Philadelphia borders the Holmesburg and Mayfair sections, and shares many of the same demographic traits; a mix of business, homes, schools and churches. Area Civic Association’s work very hard to help mold a community that strikes a healthy balance between business development and residential attractiveness. The Holmesburg Civic Association (“HCA”), Mayfair Civic Association (“MCA”), Mayfair Business Association (“MBA”) and Mayfair Community Development Corporation (“MCDC”), in response to neighborhood outrage as well as a community rally that brought hundreds to the proposed location, will hold a community meeting at Lincoln High School to address the opening of a proposed Methadone Clinic in our neighborhood at 7900 Frankford Avenue (at Decatur St.). The purpose of this meeting is to inform the Holmesburg and Mayfair communities of developments relevant to this issue. Panelists will then address the crowd individually and take questions at the conclusion of the presentations. Invited panelists include Fred Moore, President of HCA Joe DeFelice, President of the MCA, Mike Scotese, President of the MBA, Suzann St. Marie, Executive Director of the MCDC, City Councilwoman Joan Krajewski, State Representative Kevin Boyle, State representative Michael McGeehan, State Senator Mike Stack, US Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz, 15^th Police District Captain Frank Bachmeyer, Dennis Kulp, Owner of Villa Anna Associates (the leasing agent for the property) and Carl primavera, Attorney for The Healing Way, Inc., i.e. the proprietor of the proposed methadone clinic.[1]

The Meeting will begin promptly at 6PM with opening and panelist remarks occupying the first hour and questions from the audience consuming the second hour. Dear Senator Toomey,

This letter is to serve as notification to you of Holme Circle Civic Association’s strong and well founded opposition to the opening of a methadone clinic at 7900 Frankford Avenue.

Reasons for our opposition to this are listed below:

• The location is 100% unsuitable for a methadone clinic. There is a daycare, two (2) churches and two (2) schools all within 200 yards of the proposed location. The daycare and church are right across the street. Frankford Avenue is also major commercial artery for Mayfair and Holmesburg. Housing a methadone clinic in a busy commercial district will only hurt businesses and jobs in the neighborhoods.

• The clientele are drug addicts, and untrustworthy. The assumption is that the adjacent residents and businesses will not trust these addicts. There is a strong possibility of increased burglary, robberies, and theft and frankly the Northeast cannot afford to take these risks. Will the 15th districts receive additional officers?

• The majority of drug addicts are smokers, and as you are prohibited to smoke indoors, the individuals will be smoking outside which will result in littering and an intimidation factor to business patrons and neighbors.

• A methadone clinic will attract drug dealers to the neighborhood because they will know exactly where to find the buyers. Drug dealing may actually be a direct result of the clinic. It has been documented in numerous cases that users obtain the methadone from the clinic only to turn around and sell it on the street.

• Property Value. In addition to the aforementioned reasons, the property value of the surrounding area will decline because home buyers and business patrons will simply choose to move to an area without a methadone clinic.

The Northeast is slowly changing, and not for the better. I am imploring your assistance to help maintain what dignity the Northeast has left.

This letter is submitted to you on behalf of the Mayfair Community Development Corporation. Our community would like it publicly stated that we are against the above referenced Methadone clinic. The MCDC was formed in 1999 since then we have worked hard in rehabilitating and selling 23 homes. Eight were multi family converted back to single family. Eleven were sold to single parents. Six were sold to first time buyers and the one was redeveloped for total handicap accessibility. MCDC has built two mini parks, a community and senior center to name a few. MCDC also responsible for quality of life and greening programs throughout our neighborhood. In our business district we have just completed a Streetscape Program which included stamped sidewalks, median greening, benches, planters, trash cans, banners, decorative lighting, fencing, plants and trees. On top of that we are responsible to maintain these areas through our Clean Sweep program.

At this proposed location along our main business corridor it is surrounded by Seniors and Children. Below many of these places can see the sight from there front doors and the others are no more than 2 blocks away. JH Brown Elementary School, Guppies Childcare Center, Munchkinland Day Care Center, Little Ducklings Day Care Center, Holmesburg Baptist Church and Grade School, India Pentacostal Church, Holmesburg United Methodist Church, Living Waters Ministries, Mount Zion Baptist, Emmanual Episcopal Church, Fountain of Life Church and the Holmesburg branch of the Free Library.

MCDC maintains a strong working relationship with our Business association, Civic association, Town Watch, and our neighboring Civics to preserve the quality of life in our community.

Dear Dr. Avila,

I would like to inform you that the Morrell Park Civic Association and Town Watch support the Holmesburg Civic Association, the Mayfair Civic Association and many other Associations in their OPPOSITION to the proposed Methadone Clinic located at 7900 Frankford Ave, Philadelphia.

We oppose the issuance of a license to distribute narcotics, specifically methadone at this location. There are three daycare centers, churches, an elementary school, a public library and hundreds of families located within a short walk from 7900 Frankford Avenue. This location as a methadone clinic poses a direct threat to the quality-of-life of our neighborhood community.

As a family orientated neighborhood this clinic will potentially lead to the collapse of Frankford Avenue as a commercial corridor, destroy the quality-of-life of the Holmesburg neighborhood, devalue homes and accelerate the relocation of hard-working Northeast Philadelphians.

Our concerns also include the security and safety of those in all neighborhoods who are connected by SEPTA’s 66 bus route to daily necessity, employment, and entertainment.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration in reevaluating the licensing of this facility.

Please accept this letter on behalf of the Mayfair Business Association (“MBA”) which represents the businesses of the Mayfair Community as well as the businesses along Frankford Avenue from Solly Ave. to Harbison Ave. in Northeast Philadelphia. We stand in opposition to the above referenced business and support the Holmesburg Civic Association (“HCA”) and the Mayfair Civic Association (“MBA”), of which I serve as President, in their opposition as well. The location of the property is within one city block of three day care facilities, a Christian elementary school, hundreds of houses, a public library that attracts many young students and in addition to these properties; other schools including JH Brown Elementary are all within a very short walking distance of the location. Since this issue came to light, many businesses have stated that they would sell their property and move outside the City if this is approved. We have worked very hard over the last five years to restore “the Avenue” to a place where people want to come for both leisure and shopping essentials. An establishment like the one above would drastically decrease the quality of life and make this destination less desirable and, in our opinion, less safe.

Since our organization was reformed, we started our annual “Mayfair May Fair” which highlights the businesses along the Avenue complete with an action packed weekend of giveaways, safety expos, rides, performances, etc. We have also restored our annual Thanksgiving Parade which brought thousands of people back to our neighborhood as well as our annual Christmas Tree lighting which also is featured prominently along the Avenue. We feel that opening an establishment like the one above will negatively impact all the work we have put in and force residents and neighbors alike to give up on our community. We will not give up and therefore, we urge you to deny the application of the above referenced business for the reasons stated above. Congresswoman Schwartz,

News of a proposed "methadone clinic" to be located at 7900 Frankford Ave, one block south of Rhawn and Frankford, has shaken the Holmesburg/Mayfair community in Northeast Philadelphia to the core. This is the heart of Holmesburg with many nearby churches, schools, daycares, library, firehouse, and a vast network of single family dwellings and small businesses. We are all struggling to sustain a foothold in these trying social and economic times. The stigma associated with "methadone clinics" has resulted in extremely negative expectations, perhaps even the death knell of our community. In addition to the many well documented reports of abuse and misuse at "methadone clinics" our ignorance and fear of the unknown are fueling the blazes of outrage. The ignorance is not entirely of our own making. Numerous attempts have been made over the past 6 months - since January 2011 when the Phila L&I permit was posted - to get information on what kind of medical practice was planned for the 7900 Frankford Ave facility, to no avail. There has been absolutely no transparency or the slightest attempt on the part of the medical facility or anyone associated with it to reach out to the community. Quite the opposite has been the case.

It is now confirmed at this late date (as of last Wed, July 13) that an application has indeed been submitted to the PA Dept of Health for a license to distribute narcotics (ie, methadone) at the as yet to open medical facility at 7900 Frankford Ave. The State DAPL (Drug and Alcohol Program Licensure) approval is only one of the government agencies needed to get the clinic up and running. There are also two Federal agencies that must approve the application, DEA and CSAT.

The Holmesburg and Mayfair Civic Associations have banded together to oppose in the strongest possible terms this potentially fatal injection into the center of our residential communities and the vital Frankford Ave business corridor.

ON SATURDAY morning, my son was crossing Frankford Avenue near Ashburner, and he was struck by a red pickup. The driver left my son to die.

Now he's in Jefferson Hospital in critical condition. I will not rest until justice is done. My son has a broken back and pelvis, 17 broken ribs, a punctured lung and tire marks on his chest, arms and face.

Shuttle – On May 24, 2011 at 7PM, we met with representatives of the taverns, leaders from the business and civic associations along with the town watch and Captain Bachmeyer and one of his sergeants. – It was an initial meeting and everyone agreed that if this event is to continue, it must done differently. Items that were discussed – more security, more police, a takeover by the business association, portapottie trailers, increased fees, no open containers, a press conference, proper signage, etc – we are planning on meeting again in September after we come up with a game plan

East Mayfair Discussion/Update – prior to the meeting, we met with the Holmesburg Civic Association Board and members of no man’s land/unrepresented area (South of Sheffield, North of Cottman, Frankford Ave to the River) to discuss representation of this area – members of that area feel they should be part of the Holmesburg Civic so Holmesburg decided to take it up at their next meeting – Mayfair Civic decided that I Holmesburg rules against it, that they will take it on a temporary basis and expand their boundaries.

Playground Update:

We have reached 43% of Our Fundraising Goal ($21,000) – we have sent solicitations for help to State reps Boyle and McGeehan and City Councilpeople Krajewski, Rizzo, Kelly and Green. Kaboom is ready to move forward with the project, essentially a playground worth roughly $50k donated to us; all they need is permission to build from the School District and the Civic/CDC needs to purchase “Build Day” insurance, which we are in the process of securing, in order to “Hold Harmless” Kaboom and its funding partner.

Easter Egg Hunt, very successful… very successful. 600 Kids, not including Parents. Nearly 1,000 Participants.

Bake Sale was extraordinary. The Tot Area was well received. Krispy Kremes were very generous.

Another Event planned for Early October, Pumpkin Picking. We anticipate another Successful Event.

KABOOM are behind us, 100%. We are awaiting a Letter from the School District, to proceed.

A Letter has been sent to all of our Locally Elected Officials.

An Issue is the Shift Change with the Police Department (15^th); we need to ensure adequate coverage when the Events let out.

The Mayfair Business Association is excited to announce its Fourth Annual “May Fair” festival along Frankford Ave and its Third Annual “Mayfair Fallen Heroes Run”. Business Association President Mike “Scoats” Scotese, owner of the Grey Lodge, is excited to announce a new wrinkle to this year’s May Fair with the incorporation of a stage with live bands and awards to coincide with the 15^th Police District’s Advisory Council’s (PDAC) Community Day at the triangle at Cottman and Frankford Aves. Scotese said, “I am proud that this event has continued to grow in size as well as grow in community involvement. Some highlights of these years’ events include at Tot-Lot at See-Saw Daycare, a Health Fair at Stan’s Health, an Art Fair at the Devon Theater, and giveaways along the Avenue. This ‘May Fair’ is the premier family fun day in Mayfair”

We will start the day with our Third Annual Fallen Heroes Run and Walk. All proceeds from this race will go to the Heroes Thrill Show and the Sgt. Patrick McDonald Scholarship Fund with residual to the rebuilding of the Mayfair Memorial Playground. This year’s honoree is Sgt. Patrick McDonald, a highway patrol motorcycle cop who was killed in the line of duty in 2008. Civic Association President Joe DeFelice stated, that his group chose McDonald because “he carried with him the strong neighborhood values that our own residents recognize from our community.” The race will kick-off at 8:30AM at Ryan and Sackett Sts where we will have a bagpiper and a vocalist before the many participants compete in our 5K run.

All Day there will be free parking along Frankford Avenue provided by the Philadelphia Parking Authority from 10AM to 4PM.

These events are helping highlight an exciting year for Mayfair and are just another reason that Mayfair is a great place to live, work and play.

Mayfair May Fair set for May 14

The Mayfair Business Association recently gathered to plan the fourth annual Mayfair May Fair, which is scheduled for Saturday, May 14.

The event will be held rain or shine along Frankford Avenue, from Harbison Avenue to Rhawn Street, from noon to 4 p.m. It’ll feature sidewalk sales, giveaways and prizes.

There will be live musical performances by Mike LeCompt, A.J. Slick, Boss Hydro, Static Lounge and Grafenberg and acoustic sets by T&N and Mike McCullough.

The Grey Lodge Pub, at 6235 Frankford Ave., will offer free hot dogs to anyone sporting Phillies gear from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Fans can watch the Phils face the Atlanta Braves and enjoy $3 Chesterfield Ale pints and $1 Pennsylvania Dutch birch beer pints. Yuengling T-shirts will be given away, and one patron will win two Phillies tickets.

Mayfair Shop ‘n Bag, at 6420 Frankford Ave., will offer free hot dogs, drinks, water ice, baked goods and deli items. There will be music, and “SpongeBoy” will hand out balloons and prizes and pose for pictures with children.

The Philly Soft Pretzel Factory will hold a cheesesteak pretzel-eating contest and invite kids for pony rides, face-painting, a Moonbounce and other activities.

The 15th Police District Advisory Council will set up information tables at Frankford and Ryan avenues.

That same day, the business association will join the Mayfair Civic Association in presenting the third annual Mayfair Fallen Heroes 5K Run/Walk.

Registration costs $20 through May 12 and $25 thereafter. Sign-ups will take place from 7:30 to 8:20 a.m. on the day of the race, which starts at 8:30 at the Abraham Lincoln High School parking lot at Sackett Street and Ryan Avenue.

Proceeds will benefit Hero Thrill Show Inc., which provides college scholarships for the children of Philadelphia police officers and firefighters killed or disabled in the line of duty; the Sgt. Patrick McDonald Scholarship Fund; and Mayfair Memorial Playground.

Awards will be presented to winners.

Officer of the month:
P/O McCrane received "Police officer of the Month" award. P/O McCrane responded to the robberry in progress at 1300 Dyre St, where a 12 year old reported that he was robbed point of gun by 2 juveniles while standing at the bus stop. P/O McCrane was able to apprehend the juveniles shortly after-12 year old and 17 year old who lived in the vicinity. As a result of P/O McCrane's quick thinking, both juveniles were arrested immediately. P/O McCrane received a plaque from the 15th district PDAC as well as commendation from Senator Tartaglione's Office, Bill Greene's Office as well as Kevin Boyle's office.
Senator Tartaglione was also present-she received a plaque from the 15 PDAC for her work in the community.

Mayfair Fallen Heroes Run

The 3rd Annual Mayfair Fallen Heroes Run will take place on May 14th, 2011 at 8:30AM at the Abraham Lincoln High School Parking lot (Ryan Ave at Sackett St) in Mayfair. The Run, which was started three years ago by the Mayfair Business and Civic Associations as the kick-off event to their Annual May Fair, was organized to honor Police and Fire killed in the line of duty.

In the late 2000s, Philadelphia felt a significant increase in the violent deaths of their men and women in Blue; the business and civic leaders of the Mayfair community (a Northeast Philadelphia Neighborhood) felt it was their duty to honor these men and women that protect them daily. The Run alternately honors either police or fire in subsequent years. The Previous two honors were Officer Gary Skerski (in the inaugural year), who was brutally murdered responding to a call in the 15th District and Firefighter John Redmond, who succumbed fighting a fire at a South Philly church. The first two years drew 150 and 280 runners respectively.
This years honoree is Sgt. Patrick McDonald, a highway patrol motorcycle cop who was killed in the line of duty in 2008. McDonald, though not from Mayfair, carried with him the strong neighborhood values that our own residents recognize from our community. The funds raised from this event will go evenly to the Hero Thrill Show, which benefits the Children of Police and Fire killed or injured in the line of duty and to the Sgt. Patrick McDonald Scholarship fund with residual going to help rebuild the Mayfair Memorial Playground which was originally laid in memory of those that served our community.

The Run is Twenty Dollars ($20) if registered online and Twenty-Five ($25) the day of the event. The Mayfair Civic Association (“MCA”) is excited to announce its First Annual Mayfair Easter Egg Hunt. MCA President Joe DeFelice is very proud of this event which he feels helps fill the void between our Christmas tree lighting in December and our Fallen Heroes Run and “May Fair” in May. DeFelice stated, “This event is a culmination of many neighbors who had not previously known each other coming together for a cause that is beneficial to our community at large. It is events like this that hold together the fabric of our neighborhood and make it tight knit as we know it is. It also gives an opportunity to visit the Mayfair Memorial Playground, which we have been raising money to rebuild, and to socialize with like minded parents and children from our community.” The event was the brainchild of MCA Playground Committee who thought the best way to showcase our efforts of rebuilding the playground would be to host an event at that location. Our Committee members Mia Hylan, Dana Lambie, Melinda Mulvenna and Anna Stacey have been working for weeks with the rest of the MCA membership to come up with a structure for the event.

The event will be free for the first 200 children thanks to a generous donation from American Insurance Agency. Each child will receive a prize for their participation and members of the MCA will be hosting a bake sale on the premises. Though it is a free event, donations are highly appreciated. The Committee wants the community to remember, “The main focus of this event is to raise awareness to our plight of rebuilding this playground, but we would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge the need for funds is quite prevalent in our minds and we welcome any donations that come our way. Many have stepped forward in pledging their support hopefully, next year’s egg hunt will be held in our completed playground.”

This event is one of many exciting things happening in Mayfair this year! The Mayfair Civic Association and the Mayfair Business Association working on projects like this will only strengthen our motto - Mayfair is a Great place to Live, Work, and Play.

SHAMROCK SHUTTLE GETS MIXED REVIEWS AT MAYFAIR MEETING

The Mayfair Civic Association gave mixed reviews to the Shamrock Shuttle, and the group is looking forward to a few more positive events this spring.

An Easter egg hunt is scheduled for Saturday at noon at Rowland Avenue and Vista Street. The Easter Bunny will make an appearance. The rain date is April 16.

Children up to age 10 are welcome to participate. They should bring their own baskets.

The cost is $1 per child, with proceeds going to Friends of Mayfair Memorial Playground.

The group plans to purchase new equipment at Mayfair Memorial Playground, which closed in 2008 following an injury to a little girl. The playground is located at Rowland and Vista, on the grounds of Abraham Lincoln High School.

On Saturday, May 14, the community will come together for the fourth annual Mayfair May Fair and the third annual Fallen Heroes Run.

It looks like the Mayfair Memorial Playground is finally being rebuilt.

The playground in front of Lincoln High School on Ryan Avenue was torn down three years ago after a little girl fell and was injured. The School District of Philadelphia was originally only supposed to replace the poor matting blamed on the fall, but ended up ripping the whole thing out, said Joe DeFelice, president of the Mayfair Civic Association.

Now, DeFelice, along with the Friends of Mayfair Memorial Playground, have raised $17,000 and hope to get the additional money needed for the playground from KaBOOM!, a non-profit organization that builds playgrounds, and the Philadelphia School District. The only problem is the two groups can’t seem to get along, DeFelice said.

With the City Council primary elections right around the corner, candidates for Philadelphia’s 6th District seat waited their turn to speak to residents of Mayfair at Tuesday night’s civic association meeting in the John Perzel Community Center.

“What a fun experience for me! Finally got to put some faces with the names of people who are following me on Facebook,” said Sandy Stewart, the Republican candidate for the 6th District seat in City Council.

Philadelphia’s 6th District seat is up for grabs, as long-time Democratic Councilwoman Joan Krajewski decided to retire after this term. Krajewski has held her position since 1979 and the race to succeed her is heating up, as the primary elections will be held Tuesday, May 17.

Joe DeFelice, president of the Mayfair Civic Association covered several neighborhood issues on a condensed agenda. Before handing the microphone to the candidates, DeFelice mandated that each candidate only speak for 90 seconds....
