"Bringing Music to Mayfair"

Now is the time to show your community spirit and pride!

On Sunday November 20th, 2011 (rain date - December 4th) from Noon to 3:00, please join us in our 35th stroll down "The Ave"! 
We want to celebrate our community and all of the local business who have been the financial backbone of our neighborhood. Many generations have come to the avenue for this fun filled family event each fall whether they still live here, or have since moved away.
 
This year we have made a few exciting changes!  

The Grand Marshall this year will be Ed Kelly, who was, and still is, a very active member in our community! He's also the man responsible for building the Pennypack Stage for all to enjoy live, local music. Once Ed was chosen, we found it only fitting that the theme for the 2011 Mayfair/Holmebsurg Thanksgiving Parade be - "Bringing Music to Mayfair"

We will have two announcers this year. One located at Ryan and Frankford avenues, and the other towards the end of the Parade Route. Participants will
have the opportunity to perform for two to three minutes at each location. 

The triangle at Cottman and Frankford avenues this year will be buzzing with radio station B101, balloon artists, face painters and much more!

We've also added the opportunity for our local community to enter in their own home made floats, as well as a baby/toddler contest!

A baby/toddler section of the parade will feature ribbons awarded for the
"Best Fancy Duds" for a boy and girl, as well as the "Most Creative Stroller or Wagon" and "Best Parade Themed Stroller or Wagon".

  We'll also be awarding ribbons for the
"Most Creative Float", "The Funniest Float", as well as "The Best Parade Themed Float".

All community floats and participants are the sole responsibility of the towing vehicle owner. The towing vehicle must be fully insured, and the driver / operator must be currently licensed. All floats must be family oriented, and due to the Septa trolley lines, no taller than 12 feet high. All floats must pass the Parade Committee inspection prior to running in the parade.
 
Each year the parade is put on through donor support and advertising opportunities. 


The parade route runs from Rhawn street to Knorr street.

We have a STRICT DEADLINE of November 4th for NEW banner entries, and ALL entries are to have their information handed in by November 11th - NO EXCEPTIONS!

Lastly, we ask that you only patronize approved vendors (easily spotted by their yellow buttons) for the parade.

Medicare's 2012 Open Enrollment drug and health plan data goes live Saturday, Oct. 1
 
Online "Plan Finder" offers unbiased resource for people with Medicare to review 2012 plan options
 
In advance of the new, earlier annual enrollment period, people with Medicare can begin reviewing plan benefit and cost information on Saturday, October 1st, 2011. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will launch access to its popular web-based Medicare Plan Finder that allows beneficiaries, their families, trusted representatives, and senior program advocates to look at all local drug and health plan options that are available for the 2012 benefit year.
 
"With Open Enrollment coming early this year, it is important that people with Medicare take advantage of the next couple weeks to review their current coverage and compare it with the options that are available for next year," said CMS Administrator Donald M. Berwick, M.D.  "The information that's available now on the Plan Finder will also help caregivers, health providers, and partners that support and counsel seniors and people with disabilities in selecting the best plan for their needs."
 
The annual enrollment period begins earlier this year, on October 15th, and runs through December 7th.  People with Medicare will have seven weeks to review Medicare Advantage and Part D prescription drug coverage benefits and plan options, and choose the option that best meets their unique needs. The earlier open enrollment period also ensures that Medicare has enough time to process plan choices so that coverage begins without interruption on January 1, 2012. 
 
People can use the Plan Finder – available at www.Medicare.gov  –by inserting their home zip code to find out which Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Prescription Drug (Part D) plans are available in their areas.

Tacony Day

Please come out and Help our neighboring  Civic assoc in celebrating Tacony day and lending a helping hand ...
 
This year marks the 20th Annual Tacony History Day! On September 17th our neighborhood will continue its proud tradition with an array of string bands, drum and bugle corps, youth groups, classic and military vehicles making their way up Torresdale Avenue at 11:00 AM! The Parade route is expected to return to Princeton Avenue, where it will turn to Cottage Street, after the long-awaited completion of Phase 1 of the I-95 re-ramping project. The 20th Annual Disston Festival, held immediately after the Parade at Disston Recreation Center, will feature the usual complement of kiddie rides, games, contests, live music and dancers plus expanded refreshment options. The big feature is always the indoor display of local memorabilia and Tacony history for a nostalgic trip through time.

Things have been very active in Mayfair lately!
A NEW playground, the Methadone Clinic, the May-Fair, Pennypack Concerts, the Parade, Membership Drive, Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony - where to begin? I'll touch on a few and let others chime in on the rest.

Our Mayfair May-Fair was a huge success this year and it continues to get better and better each year! Thanks again to all who participated and helped to make this years Fair a fabulous family fun filled day! We're already planning next years Fair, so if you've got any suggestions or would like to help out, please feel free to send em on over or sign up!

The Pennypack Concerts have been absolutely amazing! Well over 1000+ people attend these shows every week and they're consistently trouble free and run flawlessly (as long as Mother Nature lets it - haha). The Mayfair Civic and Business Associations attend these shows every week under our red tent and we observe families come to these shows, enjoy themselves, and donate their hard earned money to keep these shows going. Once the concert is over, they collect themselves including their trash, and leave peacefully. It sounds so simple, but it really speaks volumes for the people of Mayfair. Thank you!

As I'm sure most of you know, Pennypack was flooded out during hurricane Irene, and the trailer and it's contents were a total loss. Sound equipment, lights, tables, etc. it's all gone. Donations are seriously needed to replace these things. Please go to Pennypack.org to make your donation. You can even use payal! The entire board at Pennypack Thanks You for your support!

The Mayfair tee shirts are selling like HOT CAKES! You can pick yours up at any of the Pennypack Concerts, or they're available at BellaLisa Hair Studio right on Cottman avenue (3530).
They make great Christmas presents!

So become a member, encourage your neighbor to do so, get involved, and help us keep Mayfair a GREAT place to live, work, and play!

Meetings for the Holmesburg/Mayfair Thanksgiving Parade are already underway! This years theme is "Bringing Music to Mayfair" and we've selected Ed Kelly as this years Grand Marshall as not only has he been so active in and around Mayfair, but he's also the guy who (with his own finances), built the stage in Pennypack that we all enjoy during the concerts. Several local bands have already signed up to play in this years parade. We're also adding something new to the parade to include even MORE Holmesburg/Mayfair residents! This year, we're allowing anyone who wants to, to build their own float and run it up the ave on parade day! Floats must be family oriented and within size requirements. If you're interested in getting involved in this years parade, or building a float and entering it in the parade, shoot us an email and we'll set you up.
The Mayfair Civic Association membership is growing, however we'd like EVERYONE in Mayfair to get involved! For those of you who have not yet signed up, please go to our website and download and mail in the application, or they're also available at BellaLisa. Dues can be paid there as well.
