Re: Zoning Application:

3101 Fanshawe St.

Applicant: Siew May Wong

Date of Hearing: Tuesday August 31, 2010

Time of Hearing: 9:30 am

To Whom It May Concern:

Please accept this letter as the official stance of the Mayfair Civic Association (“MCA”). We recently held a meeting a meeting where both the community and the business were represented. Both sides were able to ask questions and this was an open forum. After this meeting, the MCA took a vote and decided that they could not stand behind this business; therefore we ask that you deny the application of the above for a daycare. This property or this block is not conducive to handling a business like this. This is a residential block. When our neighborhood was designed, it was clearly set out with separate commercial and residential districts. We have many vacant stores in our commercial districts, i.e. along Frankford Avenue, in the Mayfair Shopping Center, etc. that would be a better location for this type of business. The increased traffic and potential for an accident on this residential block makes this use unappealing to our neighbors.

Therefore, we ask that this board either deny this request. Thank you. Feel free to contact me with any questions that you may have.

Sincerely,

UPDATE-COTTMAN AND FRANKFORD-Contact Eric Matson

Eric Matson - Take the Boards Down

This past weekend, a group of convicts escaped while in transport and all news stations descended upon Cottman and Frankford Aves. We were treated to seeing our beloved intersection on every news station. The site of Cottman and Frankford looked atrocious due to the continued presence of peeling plywood on atleast 3 of the storefronts. These deteriorating boards make the avenue look run down and portrays the neighborhood in a negative light. If you are sick of this sight and/or would like to see these come down, we urge you to contact the property manager,
Eric Matson, at (610)324-9600 or emattson@professionalrealtyadvisors.com and ask him to take these down immediately.

He has been asked atleast 10 times over the last 2 months and has an excuse everytime someone contacts him.

Wawa

All
We were contacted by Brett Feldman, from Klehr Harrison Law Firm representing a developer who plans/wants to open a new super Wawa, at the former Northeast Lincoln Mercury dealer at Tyson Ave and Roosevelt Blvd, equipped with gas pumps. This wawa would replace the long-tme, though much smaller, Wawa at Brous and Tyson. The Wawas at Gilham and Frankford and Sheffield and Frankford will not be affected. They plan on meeting with the community in the near future. Once we receive a date we will inform you.

Thanksgiving Parade and More

From Board Member Suzanne St. Marie:

This email is an update to the parades after speaking with Gary Cozens and Reese Hartey today by phone. Unless absolutely necessary we will not need to meet.

The Holiday parade as of 2010 has changed hands from the Optimist club to the Mayfair Business Association. The parade will be held on Sunday November 21st with a rain date of the following week. Gary Cozens has been a great help in mentoring through this 1st year process for us. On the phone today he cleared up the talk about the Parade of talent at the Perzel Center. The Optimist club will not hold an event as long as the parade goes on. The Optimist club has a long history with the children of this community. Their major concerns are making sure the kids get Santa and the Mrs. and the children get to display their talents from the dance schools etc.

With that said the Von Stuben day parade will continue as it always has. If they are in the need of extra help they can reach out to the MBA and Mayfair Civic Association. Both organizations are now working in sync hand and hand.

Great work Sue!

Paddy Whacks Update

On Monday evening, approx 40 neighbors came out for another Paddy Whacks meeting because Paddy Whacks changed into original application from nightclub with take out to restaurant/bar. There was some discussion with one neighbor, from the 3300 block of Longshore, voicing his optimism that Paddy Whacks would bring "much needed jobs" to the area, the neighbrs decided that the risk far outweighed the reward and voted unanimously to oppose (the lone proponent had left before the vote was taken). They cited the same concerns that they had previously; it goes against the existing overlay, parking would be a nightmare, there would be added trash, added traffic, etc.
The group also spoke of hiring a zoning atty as well as adopting all the work they had done thus far. They collected money and reaffirmed that there would be a bus for the Zoning hearing Still no date for the Zoning hearing, once there is one, we'll pass it along.

Parking Advisory August 16th through the 20th.

From Tom Dougherty, VP of Lincoln High School:

Joe, I think it wise to share with you that Lincoln High was asked to host a week of Administrative Workshops, 8 am to 4 pm that MAY impact with on street parking within the immediate community. Anticipating such matters, the school district has made available a "yellow bus" shuttle from Northeast High to our doorstep for the several hundred administrators each of the five days, August 16th through the 20th.
Thanks, Tom

Lincoln High School Update

Last week we had the pleasure of sitting down with Lincoln's Prinicipal Don Anticoli and his Vice-Principal Tom Dougherty. We decided that the Community would benefit from visiting Lincoln High School so we decided to hold our September meeting a Lincoln where Mr. Anticoli will be our guest speaker and will take questions from the audience.
Last week we received a call from some neighbors that had a run in with Lincoln students leaving one of the High School's summer sections. We decided it would be in the community's best interest to open a dialogue before the school year starts. We discussed many topics, such as violence, vandalism, the new school property, etc. Therefore this should be a good meeting to discuss these topics.

Our September meeting will be Tuesday September 28, 2010 at 7PM.

Nail Salon

To Whom It May Concern:

Please accept this letter as a letter of support from the Mayfair Civic Association (“MCA”) to the Holmesburg Civic Association’s request to deny the application of the above for a nail salon. There are already an abundance of nail salons in these two neighborhoods. Also, City Council passed an overlay a few years back restricting nail salons from the Frankford Avenue Corridor. While this business would not be directly on the Avenue, it would remain close enough and therefore should be contained therein such overlay. Therefore, the MCA supports the decision of the Holmesburg Civic Association and its neighbors to deny such request.

Feel free to contact me with any questions that you may have.

Sincerely,
