UPDATE: Paddy Whacks Zoning Hearing Postponed

All,
We were recently informed by the Attorney for Paddy Whacks that they requested a continuance of the Zoning Board hearing scheduled for this week. Therefore, there will not be a hearing this week. Once we receive a new date we post it immediately and new arrangements will be made for transportation, etc.
Thank you for your patience in this matter.

Re: Zoning Application:

3101 Fanshawe St.

Applicant: Siew May Wong

Date of Hearing: Tuesday April 20, 2010

Time of Hearing: 9:30 am

To Whom It May Concern:

Please accept this letter as a request to continue the Zoning hearing in the above referenced matter. This matter was recently made aware to us and we, the community, have not had the opportunity to sit down with the applicant and hear their plans for this business. We recently spoke to the applicant today and mutually agreed to continue this hearing. The applicant stated that she would personally ask for a continuance.

In the alternative, should this board decide not to continue this matter, we therefore ask that you deny the application of the above for a daycare. This property or this block is not conducive to handling a business like this. This is a residential block. When our neighborhood was designed, it was clearly set out with separate commercial and residential districts. We have many vacant stores in our commercial districts, ie along Frankford Avenue, in the Mayfair Shopping Center, etc. that would be a better location for this business. The increased traffic and potential for car accidents on this residential block makes this use unappealing to our neighbors. .

Therefore, we ask that this board either deny this request or atleast continue it to a future date. Thank you. Feel free to contact me with any questions that you may have.

Sincerely,

Date of Hearing: August 4, 2010

Time of Hearing: 4:00 pm

Dear Zoning Board of Adjustment:

Please accept this letter of support regarding the above on behalf of the Mayfair Business Association (“MBA”) and Mayfair Civic Association (“MCA”). We have had the opportunity to meet with the property owners, Tantala and Associates, who will operate their engineering firm at the premises and believe that their business will be an asset to our business corridor and neighborhood. In fact, Tantala Associates have a good reputation as a hardworking, family run engineering firm that has practiced in Philadelphia for many years.

Mayfair has continuously proven that is a great place to do business and we are happy to aid Tantala Associates in their endeavor.

Feel free to contact me with any questions that you may have.

Elizabeth Rodriguez

Forbidden Beauty Day Spa

NW Corner of Frankford and Tudor St Rear

Philadelphia, PA 19136

Re: Provisos for your business

To Ms. Rodriguez:

Please accept this letter as a follow up to our previous discussion regarding your business. Recently you were able to receive your permits from the City “Over the Counter”, i.e. without going for a variance before the Zoning Board of Adjustment. I hope that your ability to do this does not cloud the agreements that were made at our meeting of May 24, 2010. We realize that your type of business specializes in services i.e. facials, body wraps, etc. We also realize that a sizable portion of your business comes from the sale of beauty products. As you may or may not know, the sale of beauty products along Frankford Ave is prohibited without a zoning variance. Nevertheless, let this letter serve as the Approval letter on behalf of the Mayfair Business Association (“MBA”) and Mayfair Civic Association (“MCA”) should you abide by the provisos contained herein.

Provisos:

- Change the name of your business. Forbidden invites a negative response.

o This has been done. New Name "Solutions 2 Skincare"

- Set certain business hours.

- Beautify the exterior of the building with plants, shrubbery, etc,

- Join the Mayfair Business Association.

- Do not engage in any unethical practices.

- Get involved and contribute to the Community at large.

- No excessive signage, ie limit to name and type of business

Feel free to contact me with any questions that you may have.

Sincerely,

Subject: [MayfairBiz] Zoning Update

The gas station folks just called to say they are going withdrawal the application for a laundry (Joe, who can we ask to watch to make sure that happens?). I understand they will be running it as a gas station.

The property has new signage on the pumps and pennants and looks pretty good, so we have reason to be optimistic that they will run a good operation.

I am hoping to still meet with them at some point today to welcome them to the neighborhood and our business community. I will ask them then what else they plan to do with the property.

We are still on with the engineers at 6:15pm.

Sincerely,
Mike Scotese

Subject: [MayfairBiz] Two Zoning Issues

The Mayfair Business Association has two new zoning issues.

1) Proposed laudromat at 6300 Frankford Ave. They wish to demolish the gas station at replace it with another one story building.

2) 6200 Frankford Ave. An engineering firm, located in Frankford for about 30 years, has bought the 6200 Medical Building. To occupy the 2nd floor, they need a zoning change of use from medical offices to engineering. The 1st floor will remain rented for medical.

We have meetings set up with each applicant. Both are tomorrow (Wed 07/07) at The Grey Lodge (6235 Frankford). 6pm for Laundromat. 6:15pm for Engineers. We will be holding these meetings jointly with The Mayfair Civic Assoc.

Anyone who wishes to attend is welcome. If you cannot attend, but have a concern, please email me and I will raise the issue for you.

Thanks!

Boarded Up Storefronts at Cottman and Frankford

Today we spoke with Eric Matson, the developer of the storefronts on the Southeast corner of Cottman and Frankford who assured us that the boards on the fronts of the businesses would begin coming down in three weeks. He said they were waiting on permits and the facades will look exactly like the AT&T mobile store on the corner. No word yet on the types of businesses proposed. Once we find out, we'll let you know.

Residents oppose plans for new Paddy Whacks in West Mayfair

Reprinted from the Northeast Times

Residents oppose plans for new Paddy Whacks in West Mayfair

About 60 residents last week expressed their unanimous opposition to a proposed Paddy Whacks Irish Sports Pub in West Mayfair, setting up a battle later this month in front of the Zoning Board of Adjustment.

The proposed location is 6810 Frankford Ave. There are existing Paddy Whacks at 9241 Roosevelt Blvd., 2711 Comly Road and 150 South St.

Matt Jones and his partners, who own the business and the Frankford Avenue building, will try to convince the zoning board to allow them to open a fourth location during a July 27 session, which is only five days before they'd like to begin construction. The tentative opening date is Jan. 1.

The businessmen will be represented by attorney Shawn Ward. The case has already been continued twice, as bar owners waited to hear from the community.

At a June 14 special meeting of the Mayfair Civic Association, Jones described the other locations as "clean establishments" and told the audience that he and his partners were born and raised in the neighborhood. The new locations would be styled more as a restaurant than as a bar.
