Mayfair May Fair approaches
The upcoming second annual Mayfair May Fair will feature a Fallen Heroes 5k Run and Walk. The event will be part of a larger festival sponsored by the Mayfair Business Association on Saturday, May 16.
The Mayfair Civic Association offered details of the run and walk at its meeting last week. The group is teaming with the Mayfair Community Development Corp. and Northeast Roadrunners to raise money for the Hero Thrill Show Fund, which provides college scholarships for the children of police officers and firefighters killed or disabled in the line of duty.
The run and walk will honor Gary Skerski, the 15th Police District community relations officer who was shot to death in 2006.
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. in the Abraham Lincoln High School parking lot at Sackett Street and Ryan Avenue. The run and walk will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will take participants around Pennypack Park and the Lincoln and Austin Meehan Middle School campuses.
The cost is $25. Local bars, unions and politicians have agreed to sponsor the event. Donations can be sent to the Mayfair Business Association, 3530 Cottman Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19149.
The May Fair will include sidewalk sales, a bar crawl, an open house at the Devon Theater for the Performing Arts and other activities geared toward promoting businesses in the neighborhood.
The festival will coincide with the third annual 15th Police District Advisory Council Community Day. For more information, visit mayfairbiz.com
At last week's meeting, the civic association also updated its effort to raise money for Mayfair Memorial Playground, a small park at Rowland Avenue and Vista Street, on Lincoln's campus. The School District of Philadelphia shut down the playground last April because of worn equipment and an injury to a child.
The civic association and CDC will sell commemorative bricks that will be placed in a walkway. The cost is $100 or $250.
Neighbors, business owners and politicians will be able to buy bricks or a plaque on a tree or a bench, or sponsor the play area. Proceeds will go to the purchase of equipment, matting and landscaping. The school district will install the equipment and assume the liability.
Mayfair Civic Association will meet 8 p.m. Monday, April 27, at the John M. Perzel Community Center, 2990 St. Vincent St. More neighborhood information is available at mayfaircivicassociation.blogspot.com ¥¥
