Mayfair Civic lends a helping hand to neighborhood festival

By Tom Waring

Times Staff Writer

The Mayfair Civic Association plans to assist local businesses that are promoting a neighborhood festival.

The Mayfair Business Association is planning the second annual Mayfair May Fair. It's scheduled for Saturday, May 16.

One of the events that will take place is a three-mile Fallen Heroes Run/Walk around Pennypack Park and the Abraham Lincoln High School and Austin Meehan Middle School campuses.

Proceeds will go to the Hero Thrill Show Fund, which provides college scholarships for the children of police officers and firefighters killed or disabled in the line of duty.

Every year, the money will be given to the fund in the name of a fallen police officer or firefighter. In future years, organizers hope to move the run/walk to Frankford Avenue.

Details of the upcoming festival have not been finalized. Last year, there was a disc jockey, pony rides, sidewalk sales, a dunk tank and a scavenger hunt, with winners earning gift certificates to area merchants.

The fire trucks at Frankford and Hartel avenues were on display, and the Philadelphia Parking Authority permitted free parking on the avenue and side streets.

In other news from the Feb. 23 meeting:

¥ The civic association plans to join the Mayfair Community Development Corporation in opposing a large expansion of the day care at Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church, at Longshore Avenue and Hawthorne Street.

The civic association initially supported the idea of an outside agency bringing 40 children to the church, but there was a misunderstanding over the number of youths who will be housed there.

Worried that as many as 200 children will be on site, the civic group has withdrawn its initial support of the proposal.

¥ Plans are continuing to raise money for Mayfair Memorial Playground, a small park at Rowland Avenue and Vista Street, on Lincoln's campus.

Citing worn equipment and an injury to a toddler, the School District of Philadelphia shut down the playground last April. The civic association and CDC will sell commemorative bricks that will be placed in a walkway. They will be priced at $100 and $250.

Neighbors, business owners and politicians will be asked to buy a brick to purchase equipment, matting and landscaping. They will also be able to buy a plaque on a tree or bench, or sponsor the play area.

The civic association will lock and maintain the property, while the school district will install the equipment and assume the liability.

For more information on the project, call 267-331-4334 or e-mail mayfairmemorialplayground@yahoo.com

¥ The civic association is trying to bolster the ranks of the Mayfair Town Watch, which patrols the area from Robbins Avenue to Rhawn Street, from Frankford Avenue to Roosevelt Boulevard.

Residents interested in joining will receive training and identification cards.

¥ Mayfair Civic Association will meet on Monday, March 30, at 8 p.m., at the John M. Perzel Community Center, at 2990 St. Vincent St. The 15th Police District Advisory Council will meet at 7 p.m.
